Currently, already 15 cargo and 28 passenger airlines have applied for a temporary replacement of the serving airport in Dubai.
Dubai International Airport, located in the center of this metropolis, will begin the successive reconstruction of both runways (GDP) in May this year. The total duration of the work will be 80 days. The southern runway will be closed from May 1 to May 31, and the northern one from May 31 to July 20.
Repair work will almost double the throughput capacity of Dubai International Airport, and limiting the number of served flights will most likely affect foreign airlines. Dubai-based airlines Emirates and Flydubai will reduce the number of flights operated by Dubai International Airport by 22%, and foreign flights by 50%.
Currently, the new Dubai Al Maktoum Airport can serve 7 million passengers a year, while Dubai International Airport served more than five million passengers in November 2013 alone.
